History

Swami Niswambalananda Girls’ College is situated in the southernmost part of Hooghly District on the bank of Hooghly River in the Municipal area under Uttarpara-Kotrung Municipality. This part of the suburb of Kolkata was widely known for its refined culture and positive contribution to the society through its distinguished personalities consisting of benevolent, educated and socially vibrant zamindars and enthusiastic local gentry. Motivated by these social activists, a section of local energetic people came forward to establish a Girls’ College for the upliftment of female folk against the mounting social injustice to women. Their concerted endeavor gained momentum and ultimately this Degree College as a center for female education saw the light on 4th September, 1978 under the umbrella of the University of Calcutta.

It is a great pleasure to note that our college has been accredited at ‘‘B’’ Grade in 2016 by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Since its inception, this institution had experienced many ups and downs but it had overcome the same with the orchestrated endeavor of the local people, students, teaching, non-teaching staff et al. This institution has consequently attained an enviable position in the field of imparting education to larger section of girl students belonging to sprawling catchment areas of South Hooghly.

Frankly, this college has slowly emerged as a center of academic and cultural excellence with the co-operation of competent teachers, librarian and non-teaching employees. The outreach activities of the college in different directions enable the students to be people of sound learning and sterling character and motivate them to serve humanity with dedication.

Our College Library is well-equipped to serve the interest of the learners for different disciplines in both Arts and Commerce Faculties. General Students may borrow Books from the College General Library and Book Bank for home studies for a fixed period.

It is a pleasure for the College to declare that poor and meritorious students will be provided with books all through the year from the Book Bank of the college, Besides, Students may borrow books from the Departmental Library supervised by the teachers of the specific Departments. Students may use freely Reading Room for personal studies during college hours.

We have explored and are still exploring all possible avenues to generate resources and improve infrastructural facilities. As a result of joint venture of the Principal, teaching and non-teaching employees and the student population of the college, we have been accorded kind permission by the D.P.I., the Govt. of West Bengal and the University of Calcutta for teaching Honours Course in different subjects of Arts and Commerce with effect from 2001 academic session. We are sure that we have ‘miles to go and miles to go’ in order to face the challenging situation of the 21st Century in the arena of education.
